The long-running uncertainty surrounding Memphis Depay’s future in Brazil has finally come to an end. Corinthians has confirmed the Dutch forward’s contract extension after he agreed to take a significant pay cut in order to remain with the São Paulo club.
Memphis Depay to Stay at Corinthians After Accepting Pay Cut
The Dutch forward will remain in Brazil until 2028 after accepting a significant salary reduction that allowed Corinthians to overcome its financial concerns and complete his contract extension.
Corinthians president Osmar Stabile confirmed the agreement and explained that the final administrative steps were being completed to formalize the extension. The new deal will keep the 32-year-old forward at the club until the summer of 2028, providing a major boost for the squad after weeks of uncertainty.
Depay’s future had been in doubt because of Corinthians’ difficult financial situation. The club had initially indicated that it was unwilling to maintain the financial terms of his existing contract, raising the possibility that the former Manchester United and Barcelona forward could leave Brazil.
However, the player’s willingness to compromise ultimately proved decisive. Depay accepted a substantial reduction in his salary, allowing the club to restructure the agreement and bring its financial commitments within a more manageable range.
Stabile publicly praised the Dutchman’s willingness to make concessions in order to continue at Corinthians. While he did not reveal specific figures, the president confirmed that the overall value of the contract had been significantly reduced and that the new terms made it financially possible for the club to retain the player.
The renewal was also not approved by the president alone. Stabile sought the formal backing of the Council of Orientation (CORI), which met at Parque São Jorge to examine the terms of the new agreement before giving its approval.
Support from Corinthians fans was another important factor. Depay has become one of the club’s biggest stars since arriving in Brazil, making his potential departure a major concern for the supporters.
The forward is expected to return to the Joaquim Grava Training Center and rejoin his teammates under head coach Fernando Diniz. With his future secured until 2028, Corinthians has managed to retain one of its most important players, while Memphis Depay will continue his Brazilian adventure for several more seasons.
