The Lucrative Offer Franck Kessié Turned Down to Join Atalanta

There was a major offer on the table and an Italian giant ready to bring him in, but Franck Kessié had other plans.
The Ivorian midfielder surprised everyone by turning down a lucrative offer to return to Serie A and choosing a destination filled with memories: Atalanta, the club where he began building his career in Europe.
WHY DID KESSIÉ TURN DOWN JUVENTUS AND RETURN TO ATALANTA?
Juventus showed interest in signing Kessié during the transfer window and, according to GOAL, the midfielder had received a more lucrative financial offer. However, negotiations with the Turin giants did not materialize, and the Ivorian ultimately chose Atalanta, where he had already made a name for himself before becoming a European soccer star.
The return came as a free agent after his spell with Al-Ahli ended and was officially confirmed on August 29, 2026, with a multi-year contract. At 29, Kessié chose to return to Bergamo despite having alternatives that could have offered him a greater financial reward.
The decision had a strong personal component. Kessié considers Atalanta a fundamental club in his career, having joined in 2015 and found the platform to break into the first team. During the 2016-17 Serie A season, he made 31 appearances and scored seven goals, performances that attracted interest from bigger clubs.

I would like to thank Luca Percassi and the ownership for giving me the opportunity to return to Bergamo, which I consider my home and the city where it all began. Thanks to them and Atalanta, I was able to fulfill my dream of becoming a professional footballer. Atalanta gave me everything. I am very proud to be back here and to be part of this project.”
Those were Kessié's words to the media as he began this new chapter of his career.
A CAREER THAT TOOK HIM TO THE TOP
After his first spell in Bergamo, Kessié joined AC Milan, making 223 appearances and scoring 37 goals. With the Rossoneri, he won the 2021-22 Serie A title and established himself as one of the most important midfielders in Italian soccer.
His career then continued at Barcelona, where he won LaLiga and the Spanish Super Cup, before moving to Saudi Arabia. With Al-Ahli, he made 119 appearances and scored 26 goals, while also winning the Saudi Super Cup and two AFC Champions League titles.
His return to Atalanta now marks a new chapter for a midfielder with extensive international experience. Kessié has made more than 100 appearances for Ivory Coast, winning the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations and featuring at the 2026 World Cup.
More than just a transfer, his decision represents a reunion with his roots. Kessié could have chosen the money and Juventus, but instead opted to return to where it all began.
