Why Jonathan David Chose Juventus Over Barcelona and Other European Giants
Jonathan David, one of the most sought-after forwards on the market, has decided to join Juventus, despite being on the radar of FC Barcelona and several other European powerhouses. The 25-year-old Canadian striker, who became a free agent after the end of his contract with Lille, is now in Turin undergoing medical tests before signing a long-term deal with the Serie A giants.
How Was the Deal Finalized?
According to Fabrizio Romano and confirmed by ESPN, David reached a verbal agreement with Juventus shortly after his contract with Lille expired on June 30. The move will be completed on a free transfer, allowing Juve to sign one of Europe’s most prolific forwards without a transfer fee.
The striker traveled to Italy this week to undergo a medical exam and finalize the last details of his new contract, which is expected to be officially announced soon.
Why Didn’t Barcelona Make the Move?
FC Barcelona seriously considered signing David as a long-term alternative to Robert Lewandowski, especially after his impressive season in Ligue 1, where he scored 25 goals and added 12 assists. However, Barcelona’s financial limitations and focus on other targets—such as Nico Williams—kept them from making a formal offer.
Other clubs interested included PSG, Inter, Napoli, and several Premier League sides, but Juventus’ project reportedly gave David the right balance of stability, playing time, and long-term vision.
What Does David Bring to Juventus?
At just 25 years old, Jonathan David already boasts an impressive resume:
- 109 goals in 233 matches for Lille
- Consistent experience in European competitions
- A reputation as a clinical finisher with physical presence and the ability to lead the line
