Fenerbahçe Looks to Respond After a Difficult European Night

The atmosphere at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium promises to be intense when Fenerbahçe welcomes Alanyaspor on Saturday, October 17, for Matchday 8 of the 2026-27 Turkish Süper Lig.

For the Istanbul giants, this is about more than securing three points. Fenerbahçe must respond to a painful 6-0 defeat against Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League, a result that interrupted the team's momentum and raised questions about its defensive performance.

However, the domestic picture tells a different story.

Before their trip to England, Fenerbahçe had recorded two convincing league victories, defeating Eyüpspor 8-0 at home before overcoming Çaykur Rizespor 3-0 away.

Those results demonstrated the attacking potential of İsmail Kartal's team, which will now attempt to reproduce that form in front of its supporters.

With 13 points from seven matches, Fenerbahçe enters the weekend in fourth place, three points behind the league leaders. A victory would allow the Yellow Canaries to maintain pressure on the teams above them.

Alanyaspor Arrives With an Opportunity to Make a Statement

Although Fenerbahçe will have home advantage, Alanyaspor arrives in Istanbul knowing that the difference between the two clubs is minimal.

The visitors have collected 12 points from their opening seven league matches and occupy sixth place, just one point behind Saturday's opponents.

That narrow gap gives the encounter additional importance. An away victory would allow Alanyaspor to move ahead of Fenerbahçe in the standings and strengthen its position among the leading teams in the competition.

The visitors will need to remain disciplined defensively while taking advantage of opportunities to attack the spaces left by an ambitious Fenerbahçe side.

Recent meetings have favored the Istanbul club. Fenerbahçe has gone nine competitive matches without defeat against Alanyaspor, recording seven wins and two draws.

Their most recent encounter took place in January 2026, when Fenerbahçe secured a 3-2 away victory.

However, with just one point separating the teams, Saturday's meeting presents a fresh challenge for both sides.

Alanyaspor Starting Lineup

Asensio and Kanté Could Return for Fenerbahçe

Team selection will be another important factor for İsmail Kartal.

According to Turkish news agency Anadolu Ajansı, Marco Asensio and N'Golo Kanté could return to action after missing the Champions League defeat against Aston Villa because of physical problems.

Asensio had been dealing with a knee issue, while Kanté was unavailable for the European encounter after receiving a blow to his knee.

Their potential availability would provide Fenerbahçe with additional options in midfield and attack.

Meanwhile, Mert Müldür is expected to remain unavailable as he continues recovering from surgery.

The Istanbul club must also consider its upcoming European commitment against Slavia Prague on Tuesday, October 20, making squad management particularly important.
