Trabzonspor U19s Beat Inter Milan With Historic Attendance
Trabzonspor’s U19 became the first Turkish team to ever reach UEFA Youth League’s semifinals.
Trabzonspor U19s faced Inter Milan’s U19s in a quarterfinal match of the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday, April 1st. The Turkish academy team secured a 1-0 victory over the Italian club, becoming the first ever Turkish team to reach the semifinals of the competition.
Trabzonspor, however, reached another milestone – an attendance of 40,368 fans, the highest attendance ever in the history of the UEFA Youth League.
Trabzonspor U19s make history
The Turkish club played at home in the first team’s stadium, Papara Park, setting an attendance record for the entire competition. The previous record was held by Krasnodar vs. Real Madrid, with an attendance of 32,510 during the 2017-2018 season.
The Trabzon-based youth team advanced to the semifinals after also becoming the first Turkish team to ever reach the round of 16 or the quarterfinals in the competition, breaking milestone after milestone.
Trabzonspor beat Juventus 1-0 in the playoffs, then carrying on to the round of 16 to win over Atalanta in the penalties to advance to the quarterfinals.
Trabzonspor vs. Inter Milan
Playing at home with a record-breaking attendance, Trabzonspor managed to keep their strength and resilience, securing a 1-0 win over the well-renowned Italian youth club.
In the 39th minute, Inter Milan had their best chance as they were awarded a penalty. As Matteo Cocchi shot the ball right in the middle, Trabzonspor’s goalkeeper, Erol Can Çolak, saved it with his foot.
In the second half, Trabzonspor pressed Inter Milan and Ekrem Tenzi managed to score a goal in the 77th minute, securing the Turkish team’s spot in the semifinals.
Trabzonspor will now go on to face Salzburg in the semifinals of the UEFA Youth League on April 25th, in Nyon, Switzerland, and hopes to achieve yet another milestone.
