Atlético Madrid Files Complaint Against Four Real Madrid Players With UEFA
The Madrid derby's post-match tensions escalate as Atlético seeks disciplinary action.
The fallout from the recent Champions League clash between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid continues to stir controversy. More than a week after the intense derby at the Metropolitano, the focus has shifted from the pitch to the offices of UEFA, where disciplinary matters are now under review.
Following their elimination in the penalty shootout, Atlético has taken the unprecedented step of sending four separate video clips to UEFA, each allegedly showing inappropriate or provocative behavior from Real Madrid players during their post-match celebrations. The club argues that these actions contributed to escalating tensions in the stadium and violated the principles of fair play.
Atlético calls out unsportsmanlike conduct
According to journalist Rubén Uría, the red-and-white side is particularly outraged by the behavior of four individuals: Antonio Rüdiger, Vinícius Júnior, Dani Ceballos, and Kylian Mbappé. The most serious accusation centers around Rüdiger, who was filmed making a throat-slitting gesture toward the home crowd after Real Madrid secured their spot in the next round.
Vinícius, known for his expressive celebrations, is also seen in several moments gesturing provocatively at the fans, both during play and after being substituted. Meanwhile, Ceballos allegedly made an obscene arm gesture on his way to the tunnel, and Mbappé was caught on camera grabbing his groin while looking toward Atlético supporters.
These incidents came shortly after the penalty shootout concluded, and Real Madrid players ran to celebrate in front of their traveling fans. However, their path took them near Atlético’s hardcore supporters in the north stand, sparking confrontations. According to UEFA’s own report, roughly 30 to 40 plastic bottles and even a lighter were thrown from the stands—one of which Thibaut Courtois picked up and handed to referee Szymon Marciniak.
UEFA investigates both sides
Interestingly, while Atlético de Madrid is currently under investigation by UEFA for the crowd disturbances, the club is now pushing for the governing body to also act against the Real Madrid players. They cite the precedent of Diego Simeone, who was previously sanctioned for a gesture toward his own fans during a 2019 match against Juventus.
The request from Atlético highlights what they believe to be a double standard in UEFA’s handling of disciplinary actions. As the footage circulates and the governing body reviews both cases, all eyes are now on Nyon, where officials must determine whether punishment is warranted for any of the players involved.
For now, both Madrid clubs wait in silence as UEFA’s verdict looms.
