How Much Money Does Barcelona Earn for Reaching the Champions League Round of 16?
The epic comeback against Benfica secured the Blaugrana a spot in the Round of 16, bringing a massive financial boost to Barcelona's coffers.
After a dramatic 5-4 victory over Benfica, FC Barcelona has not only secured their spot in the Champions League Round of 16 but also continues to boost their financial rewards in this lucrative competition. The UEFA payouts for their performance so far reflect the immense monetary stakes involved.
A Breakdown of Barça’s Earnings
The journey began with a guaranteed $20.1 million for each of the 36 teams participating in the Champions League league phase. To this, Barça has added $2.3 million for each of their six victories, totaling $13.8 million in performance bonuses. Securing a spot in the Round of 16 brings an additional $11.8 million, along with a bonus of $2.2 million for finishing among the top 16 teams.
In total, Barcelona has already accumulated $47.9 million based solely on their sporting achievements.
Additional Rankings Revenue
Once the league phase concludes, UEFA will distribute ranking payments. These are based on a scale of $300,000increments per position. For example, the lowest-ranked team earns $300,000, while the top team pockets $10.7 million. Currently sitting in second place, Barcelona would likely earn $10.3 million if they maintain their position after their final group-stage match against Atalanta on November 29.
If Barça ends the league phase in second place, they would enter the knockout stage with a total of $58.2 million, excluding any additional earnings from their final match. Victories and draws in the Champions League group stage are worth $2.3 million and $770,000, respectively.
Potential Earnings Ahead
The financial rewards only grow as Barcelona progresses deeper into the competition. Advancing to the quarterfinals comes with a $13.5 million prize, reaching the semifinals adds another $16.2 million, and making it to the final guarantees $20 million. Winning the final adds $7 million, and participation in the UEFA Super Cup secures $4.3 million, with an extra $1 million for lifting the trophy.
The Stakes Against Atalanta
As Barcelona prepares for their final group-stage match against Atalanta at Montjuïc, the stakes are high—not only for sporting glory but also for the financial rewards. A win or draw could further boost their earnings, ensuring that their Champions League campaign remains as profitable as it is competitive.
Barça’s financial strategy in Europe is clear: success on the pitch translates directly into strengthening their financial standing, a crucial factor for the club’s future ambitions.
