Lamine Yamal Silences Critics with Stunning Goal After Month-Long Drought
Lamine Yamal has finally broken a frustrating goal drought that had been following him and was constantly brought up whenever possible. The FC Barcelona starlet delivered a moment of brilliance in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg, putting an end to a one-month, five-day scoring dry spell.
When Was Lamine Yamal’s Last Goal?
The young Barcelona forward had not found the back of the net since Barcelona’s 5-0 win over Valencia in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. Yamal sealed the scoreline that night, but 33 days passed before he struck again in the clash against Benfica. During that stretch, Barça played five matches without a goal from him.
The Goal That Ended His Drought
Lamine Yamal: One of Barcelona’s Youngest Knockout Stage Scorers
With a sensational strike, Lamine Yamal became the second-youngest player to score for Barcelona in a Champions League knockout match at 17 years and 241 days old. Only Bojan Krkić, who scored against Schalke 04 in 2008 at 17 years and 217 days old, remains ahead of him.
Lamine Yamal: "This Goal Is on Par with My Euro Cup Strike"
Following his stunning goal in Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Benfica, Lamine Yamal compared it to his famous strike for Spain against France in the Euro Cup semifinals last summer.
"This goal is on the same level as my Euro goal. I always try that shot, and today it worked," Yamal told Movistar+ after the match.
With Barcelona now through to the Champions League quarterfinals, the winger emphasized the team’s ambition:
- "We want to win as much as possible."
- "We've already shown we can compete at a high level."
- "We hope to go very far in the tournament."
Yamal also expressed his love for Champions League knockout matches:
"I love second-leg games. Playing at home in a Champions League knockout match is an experience I’ve really enjoyed."
Praise for Raphinha’s Performance
Yamal admitted that his intention in the first goal of the night, scored by Raphinha, was to take a shot himself:
"I tried to shoot, but it turned into an assist, and he finished it off. I have to thank him for that. I’m very proud of what he’s doing this season, and I hope he keeps it up."
Focused on Enjoying the Game
At just 17 years old, Lamine Yamal continues to impress in European football but remains grounded:
"I just want to enjoy myself. I try not to think about limits, just to have fun. That’s been happening a lot because my teammates make things easy for me. I’m very happy."
