¿Who else? RAPHINHAAAA GIVES BARCELONA THE LEAD
The Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium will host another thrilling European night this Wednesday, April 9, as FC Barcelona take on Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the 2025 UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. With the shocking elimination of Real Madrid at the hands of Arsenal, the Catalans remain Spain’s last hope in the tournament—and this clash promises fireworks between two of the competition’s most lethal attacking teams.
Barcelona riding high
Barça come into this game in red-hot form: unbeaten in 2025, on a 22-match streak without a loss, sitting top of LaLiga, and already qualified for the Copa del Rey final. In the Champions League, they comfortably knocked out Benfica and have already beaten Dortmund earlier this season (2-3 in Germany), thanks to a red-hot Ferran Torres and a dazzling Raphinha, who’s netted 11 goals in the tournament and is chasing Leo Messi’s record for most goals in a single campaign. The Catalan side hasn’t reached the semifinals since 2018-19 and are dreaming of lifting their sixth Champions League trophy.
Dortmund out for revenge
Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, arrive as last season’s runners-up, but have struggled with inconsistency in the Bundesliga. Still, their fighting spirit in cup competitions keeps them alive—they knocked out Lille and are now aiming for revenge against a team that’s had their number. In fact, Barcelona are unbeaten in their five previous meetings with Dortmund (3 wins, 2 draws). The Germans’ biggest weapon is Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy, who’s bagged 10 goals in the Champions League so far—two of them against the Catalans.
There are plenty of subplots too. Robert Lewandowski, now leading Barça’s attack, was once the star of both Dortmund and Bayern Munich, and knows German football inside out. Meanwhile, coaches Hansi Flick and Niko Kovač will face off after previously working together at Bayern, where Flick famously won the treble. With all these storylines coming together, Barcelona vs Dortmund is set to be a fiery, talent-packed, high-stakes battle on the European stage.
