Luis Enrique Calls PSG's Loss to Liverpool "Unfair" in Champions League
Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique described his team's 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 as "very unfair," emphasizing that PSG played "possibly their most complete match in the competition."
"I'm very proud of my team, but sometimes football is unfair," Enrique said in the post-match broadcast.
He praised Alisson Becker, calling the Liverpool goalkeeper the opposition’s best player, and declined to comment on the penalty appeal involving Bradley Barcola.
Dismissing the notion that PSG struggles against top-tier opponents, Enrique stated, "I don’t think so. We were better than Liverpool."
"They won, but I’d rather not dwell on the negative. There’s still one game left. Am I optimistic? Absolutely," he added.
PSG vs. Liverpool: A Tale of Missed Chances
A late goal by Harvey Elliott and a brilliant performance from Alisson Becker secured a 1-0 win for Liverpool at the Parc des Princes. Despite PSG's dominance and numerous scoring opportunities, their lack of efficiency—combined with Alisson’s heroics—left them empty-handed.
Liverpool’s Efficiency vs. PSG’s Frustration
Elliott scored in the 87th minute, just a minute after replacing Mohamed Salah, in what was Liverpool’s only shot on target. Arne Slot’s side withstood PSG’s relentless attacks and snapped their three-game European knockout losing streak, which included the 2022 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid.
PSG, on the other hand, relived old nightmares. Alisson’s 12+ saves denied key chances from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé, and Bradley Barcola. The VAR also ruled out a goal by Kvaratskhelia for a tight offside and dismissed a penalty claim for Barcola.
Luis Enrique Faces a Crucial Second Leg
The defeat dents Luis Enrique’s project, ending PSG’s 22-match unbeaten run. Now, the Parisians must prove they can step up against elite opposition when they head to Anfield, while Liverpool take a crucial advantage into the second leg.
