Oblak Speaks Out After Failing to Stop Rüdiger’s Penalty in the Champions League
Atlético de Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak addressed the media after his team’s Champions League Round of 16 elimination against Real Madrid, expressing his frustration over their bad luck in the penalty shootout and the pain of the defeat.
"It Hurts a Lot, But That’s Football"
Speaking to Movistar, Oblak didn’t hide his disappointment: "Of course it hurts. We played a great game, but unfortunately, we lacked a bit of luck. It’s a shame. It really hurts. We’re grateful to the fans—they were incredible in supporting us. Honestly, we’re disappointed with the loss. We couldn’t complete the comeback."
The Slovenian goalkeeper had the chance to stop Antonio Rüdiger’s decisive penalty, but despite getting a hand to it, the ball still found the back of the net. "I had a feeling he might go that way. In the end, I didn’t get there properly, and it went in. That little bit of luck was missing for us. That’s football—unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be."
Bouncing Back for the Rest of the Season
Despite the elimination, Oblak reminded everyone that the team is still competing in LaLiga and the Copa del Rey, so they need to move on quickly. "There’s still a lot of the season left. We wanted to reach the Champions League final, but now we have to pick ourselves up. We have a big match against Barcelona this weekend, and we need to win to stay near the top in LaLiga. We’re also still alive in the Copa del Rey, and hopefully, we’ll finish the season strong."
