PSG Look to Replicate Comeback Against Liverpool in Champions League
Paris Saint-Germain managed to dominate Liverpool at the Parc des Princes, but despite their control and attacking power, they failed to reflect it on the scoreboard, ultimately losing the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 by a 1-0 scoreline.
Now, Luis Enrique’s team will look to stage another comeback in the continental competition, just as they did last season.
PSG’s Comeback Against Barcelona
PSG draws inspiration from their dramatic turnaround against Barcelona last season when they also lost at the Parc des Princes (2-3) but managed to turn things around in Spain.
In the first leg, a brace from Raphinha and a goal from Andreas Christensen proved to be too much for Paris Saint-Germain, despite goals from Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha. However, they completed the comeback in the second leg.
Raphinha found the net again, but PSG responded in spectacular fashion with goals from Ousmane Dembélé, Vitinha, and a brace from Kylian Mbappé. Unfortunately for the Parisians, their campaign ended in the semifinals against Borussia Dortmund.
A Stat in PSG’s Favor
Despite the narrow first-leg loss, PSG players and fans may still have hope. It’s not often that a team withstands 28 shots and is saved by nine crucial interventions from their goalkeeper before delivering a decisive blow in the 85th minute to take control of a knockout tie.
PSG has managed to progress in two of their last five UEFA Champions League knockout-stage ties after losing the first leg, coming back to eliminate Borussia Dortmund in the 2019-20 Round of 16 (3-2 on aggregate) and Barcelona in the 2023-24 quarterfinals (6-4 on aggregate).
