PSG Strikes Fear in England in Search of a Comeback Against Liverpool
PSG is the last team from Ligue 1 to have won a European competition match in England
At the Parc des Princes, they are still asking themselves how they weren’t able to at least draw the first-leg match of the Champions League round of 16 against Liverpool. However, PSG is already focused on achieving the comeback… despite the poor results that Ligue 1 teams have had in Europe every time they visit England.
What was the last victory for a Ligue 1 team in England?
The stat is, of course, devastating: no Ligue 1 team has managed to win against Premier League teams in European competitions (Champions League, Europa League, or Conference) in the last 15 matches they’ve played in England. In fact, the overall record is 14 losses and only one draw.
However, PSG is the only team that brings some light to this terrible streak that Ligue 1 teams have been carrying every time they play in England. Proof of this is that PSG was the last team to win a European competition match against a Premier League team in England. But to find that, you have to go back five years.
Marquinhos, the sole survivor of the victory at Old Trafford
Specifically, it happened in early December 2020 at a European football temple like Old Trafford. PSG arrived as finalists of the previous edition of the Champions League, and in the fifth match of the old group stage, they defeated Manchester United (1-3). The night’s hero was Neymar, who impressed by scoring a brace.
The other goal for PSG was scored by Marquinhos. To give you an idea, he’s the only survivor from that lineup presented by Thomas Tuchel at Old Trafford, and it remains the last victory for a Ligue 1 team in England to this day. We’ll see if PSG can close this streak by overturning the match against Liverpool at Anfield after the 0-1 result in the first leg.
