Real Madrid delivers a “handful” in Champions League with double from Vinícius Jr
After recovering from the blow suffered in the classic match and the lost Supercup, Real Madrid brought their improvement to the UEFA Champions League, smashing Red Bull Salzburg 5-1. With this result, Ancelotti’s men are now just three points away from securing a direct spot in the top eight, avoiding the round before the round of 16.
The game started with Real Madrid in control, but they didn’t start with much intensity, allowing Salzburg to feel they had a chance at the Santiago Bernabéu. However, the Austrians lacked finishing power, and the Madrid side took control with goals from their attacking trio, highlighted by a double from Vinícius Jr.
Bellingham and Rodrygo lead the first blow
The lack of a true central midfielder made the opening minutes difficult. With Fede Valverde covering right-back due to the absences of Carvajal, Camavinga, and Tchouaméni, the midfield was in the hands of Ceballos and Modric, while Bellingham shone in all areas of the field. After a dangerous action from Salzburg, the Madrid front trio woke up in the 23rd minute. Rodrygo, known as 'Mister Champions', opened the scoring after an assist from Vinícius.
Total control and a showcase of talent
The second half was a stroll for the hosts. Bellingham, ever-present, assisted Rodrygo with a backheel, who then doubled the lead. Later, an error from Blaswich, the Salzburg goalkeeper, allowed Mbappé to score the fourth goal. Vinícius Jr, who had been quiet at the start, finished his performance with a spectacular goal after an assist from Modric.
A smooth finish
With the score in their favor, Ancelotti rotated his key players, including Mbappé, Rodrygo, Bellingham, and Ceballos, keeping in mind the demanding fixture list in January. Although Salzburg managed to score a consolation goal through Bidstrup, Real Madrid closed out a convincing performance, fixing their numbers after a bumpy group stage.
