Robert Lewandowski Ties Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League Record in Barcelona vs. Benfica Match
In what turned out to be a wild match, Robert Lewandowski had the opportunity to take two penalties as FC Barcelona attempted a comeback against a Benfica side that delivered a shocking performance at home. The Polish striker managed to equal a record held by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Cristiano Ronaldo's Record
After successfully converting his second penalty, the Polish forward reached 19 goals scored from the penalty spot in the Champions League, tying the all-time record previously held solely by the Portuguese star. As an additional note, it’s worth mentioning that Barcelona hadn’t been awarded two penalties in a single away game since the 1998 edition of the tournament.
Barcelona vs. Benfica Match
From the start, the Blaugrana side found themselves in trouble, conceding as many as four goals in the match. It’s worth noting that they were seeking a win to secure direct qualification to the Round of 16.
In the end, and not without delivering what many consider the match of the season in the Champions League, Hansi Flick's team achieved their goal of advancing to the next round after overcoming Benfica away (4-5).
