What Does Barcelona Need to Finish First in the Champions League?
Barcelona faces Atalanta in the final match of the Champions League group stage and could advance to the Round of 16 as group leaders. Here's what they need.
The final matchday of the Champions League league stage arrives with high stakes for FC Barcelona. After an epic comeback against Benfica in Lisbon (4-5), the Catalans have strung together six consecutive victories, keeping their hopes alive to finish at the top. However, their fate is not entirely in their own hands.
Barcelona’s Current Situation
Barça heads into the decisive clash as the second-placed team with 18 points, trailing Liverpool, who lead the group with a flawless 21-point record after winning all their matches. Barcelona’s final opponent, Atalanta, sits in seventh place with 14 points and also has a lot to play for, as they need a win to secure their spot in the Round of 16 and avoid the playoffs.
What Does Barcelona Need to Finish First?
To secure the top spot in the group, Hansi Flick’s side must meet two key conditions:
- Defeat Atalanta: Barcelona must claim all three points against the Italian side. This is the only factor entirely within their control.
- Liverpool must lose to PSV: The Catalans need Liverpool to lose their away game against PSV, currently sitting 19th with 11 points. While this scenario seems unlikely given Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the competition, it remains Barça’s sole route to the top.
If both conditions are met, Barcelona and Liverpool would be tied at 21 points. However, Barça would claim first place due to their superior goal difference (+15 compared to Liverpool’s +13).
A Tough Challenge, But Not Impossible
Barcelona has shown impressive strength and consistency in recent weeks, but overtaking Liverpool for the top spot will be an uphill battle. The Catalans must count on their strong form and hope for a surprising setback from Slot’s side against PSV.
Regardless of the outcome, Barça’s ambition to lead their group showcases their renewed competitiveness and determination this season.
