Why Isn't Pau Cubarsí Playing in Barcelona vs. Benfica Champions League Match?
The highly anticipated return of Uruguayan Ronald Araujo to the center of defense, replacing the suspended Pau Cubarsí, is the only change for Barcelona as they face Benfica this Tuesday in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
Barcelona vs. Benfica Lineup
Why is Pau Cubarsí not playing in the Champions League second leg?
In the first leg of the Round of 16, played on Wednesday, March 4, Pau Cubarsí was sent off for a foul on Vangelis Pavilidis in the 22nd minute of the match, when the Greek player was heading toward Wojciech Szczęsny’s goal. The referee deemed the tackle a dangerous action, awarding Cubarsí a straight red card.
This incident forced Hansi Flick to make a tactical change, replacing Dani Olmo with Araujo to strengthen the defense following the expulsion.
Consequences for Pau Cubarsí and Barcelona
The suspension for the red card is for one match, meaning Pau Cubarsí will miss the second leg against Benfica. However, if Barcelona advances to the Champions League quarterfinals, Cubarsí will be available for the next round, potentially facing Lille or Borussia Dortmund.
Despite his youth, Pau Cubarsí, at just 18 years old, has become one of the standout players of the new F.C. Barcelona under Hansi Flick. He has played significant minutes and solidified his role as a key defender, earning recognition as one of the most promising players in the club. Additionally, he has never been sent off with the Barcelona B team, highlighting his discipline and growth in the first team.
