Julián Alvarez Is Doubtful for the Clash Against Arsenal
Alarms have gone off at Atlético de Madrid after Julián Álvarez was ruled doubtful for the match against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League. The Argentine forward did not feature in the game against Athletic Club and has recently been working at the club’s facilities while continuing treatment for a muscle issue in his thigh.
Although he was technically available, head coach Diego Simeone chose not to take any risks during the 3–2 win for the red-and-white side at the Metropolitano Stadium. The Argentine manager preferred to carefully manage his minutes and prioritize his physical recovery, given the demanding schedule and the importance of European competition.
Squad management and focus on Europe
In recent weeks, Atlético de Madrid has been carefully managing the physical workload of several players. LaLiga has, at times, taken a secondary role, as much of the focus is placed on the UEFA Champions League, where the club remains fully ambitious.
Julián Álvarez has now gone four consecutive league matches without playing, a situation driven both by rotation and his ongoing physical discomfort. However, his impact in Europe has been outstanding. He has started nearly every continental match and has recorded nine goals and four assists, making him one of the team’s most decisive players.

Recovery process and possible return vs Arsenal
Following the victory over Athletic Club, Diego Simeone granted the squad a day off, although several players, including Julián Álvarez, reported to the training ground to continue recovery work. The medical staff is closely monitoring his progress, with the aim of having him available for the first leg of the semifinal.
The forward has not played since the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad, where he scored a crucial goal in a match that ended in a penalty shootout. Since then, accumulated fatigue has complicated his muscular condition.
At Atlético de Madrid, caution prevails. No one wants to rush his return, but there is also concern about him arriving without competitive rhythm for such a high-intensity fixture in the UEFA Champions League.
