Kompany warns Bayern players of Celtic's winning mentality
Ahead of the Champions League tie against Celtic, Vincent Kompany has warned his Bayern Munich side of their opponents' winning mentality.
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has said that his side should be wary of Celtic's winning mentality as they meet in the Champions League play-off tie in Glasgow on Wednesday.
The Bundesliga outfit, despite leading the league standings in Germany, finished 12th in the league phase of the Champions League and will need to win the two-legged play-off against Celtic to reach the last 16.
Ahead of the first leg, Kompany said Celtic's domestic dominance meant that they would not be pushovers for the German giants.
"We play against a team that is used to winning, to always go forward," Kompany said, on the eve of their meeting with the Scottish Premiership leaders.
"The five players they deploy up front are used to scoring."
Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda have scored three goals each for Brendan Rodgers' side in the Champions League this season.
Meanwhile, their winger Nicolas Kuhn has created 10 chances following a carry (travelling five-plus metres with the ball) in the Champions League this season - the most by a player in the league phase.
"This confidence is something you also take into big games. Maybe you defend less deep in your own league, but clubs dominant in their own league remain so in big games," Kompany said of their opponents.
Celtic, who have won 12 of the last 13 league crowns in Scotland, have a 13-point lead over second-placed Rangers this season, while they are 29 points ahead of third-placed Dundee United.
Bayern, meanwhile, have struggled in away matches in Europe this season, having lost three of their four games on the road.
"We are playing twice against Celtic. So they also have to come to our stadium, also a good atmosphere," Kompany said.
"We give them the respect they deserve, but if we realise the magnitude of the game we will not treat it any differently than other big games.
"Winning is the goal. Now it is a Celtic away game. I hope we can quickly show what we want to get from it. But it is one of two games and what's important is to qualify," he said.
Bayern are unbeaten in their last 13 matches against Scottish sides in major European competition (W9 D4), with their last such defeat coming against Hearts in the UEFA Cup in February 1989.
The two sides will meet again in the second leg on 18 February.
