Messi in the mirror: Mastantuono makes history with Real Madrid
A special night at the Bernabéu, a record broken at just 18, and a surname beginning to echo across Europe. The Argentine teenager sent a clear message on the Champions League stage.
A night to remember at the Bernabéu
FRANCO MASTANTUONO experienced one of those career-defining moments on Tuesday night. Still just 18, the Argentine was a standout figure as Real Madrid cruised to a 6–1 win over Monaco in the UEFA Champions League, lighting up the Santiago Bernabéu.
The former River Plate player celebrated his first-ever Champions League goal — and did it on the grandest of stages, immediately announcing himself to the European audience.
A milestone shared with Messi
At 18 years and 159 days, Mastantuono became the second-youngest Argentine scorer in UEFA Champions League history, trailing only Lionel Messi, who achieved the feat at 18 years and 131 days.
It’s a statistic that inevitably draws attention, placing the teenager in rare company and underlining the significance of his breakthrough night.
Among Real Madrid’s youngest ever
The achievement also carries weight within the club’s own history. Mastantuono is now the third-youngest player to score for Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Only Endrick (18 years, 58 days) and club icon Raúl (18 years, 113 days) managed to find the net at a younger age — a select list that speaks volumes about the moment.
Renewed prominence and a curious coincidence
Following Xabi Alonso’s departure, the Argentine has begun to reclaim a more prominent role under Álvaro Arbeloa, starting two of the team’s last three matches.
There was also a striking coincidence: Mastantuono, Messi, Raúl, and Endrick all wore the number 30 shirt when scoring their first Champions League goals. Small details, perhaps — but ones that add to the narrative.
Real Madrid have found another reason to dream. Franco Mastantuono took a decisive step onto the elite stage, blending youth, confidence and timing on a classic European night at the Bernabéu.
The journey is only beginning — but the noise around his name is already impossible to ignore.
