The 2026-27 UEFA Champions League will reach one of its biggest milestones before the league phase begins on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The draw will take place in Monaco and determine the eight opponents for each of the 36 participating clubs.
When is the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League draw?
The 36 league-phase participants will discover their eight opponents at the end of August. The draw will be one of the final steps before the competition’s main stage begins.
The timing is significant because the draw comes immediately after the play-offs are completed. The second legs of that round are scheduled for August 25 and 26, meaning the full league-phase field will be known before the draw. Twenty-nine clubs qualify directly, while the remaining seven places go to the winners of the play-off ties.
When is the 2026-27 Champions League draw?

The league-phase draw is scheduled for Thursday, August 27, in Monaco. It will be the final major step before the main stage of the competition begins, with Matchday 1 set for September 8, 9 and 10.
Unlike the former group-stage format, there are no longer eight groups of four teams. All 36 clubs are placed in one league table, although they are divided into four pots of nine for the draw. Those pots are formed according to the UEFA club coefficient rankings established at the beginning of the season, with the reigning Champions League titleholder placed as the top seed in Pot 1.
How does the Champions League draw work?

Each club will be drawn against two opponents from each of the four pots, including its own. It will face one of those two teams at home and the other away. That produces eight matches against eight different opponents: four at home and four on the road.
There are also restrictions built into the process. In principle, clubs from the same national association cannot face each other during the league phase. A team can also be paired with no more than two opponents from any other single association.
The draw establishes the opponents and whether each matchup is played at home or away. The detailed match schedule is then set by the UEFA administration, which places those fixtures across the eight league-phase matchdays.
When does the league phase begin?
Matchday 1 will be played across three days: Tuesday, September 8, Wednesday, September 9 and Thursday, September 10. From there, all 36 clubs will compete in the same standings.
The top eight teams at the end of the league phase advance directly to the round of 16. Clubs finishing ninth through 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs, while those ranked 25th through 36th are eliminated from the competition.
That makes August 27 the first major date for understanding each contender’s route through the tournament. In Monaco, all 36 participants will discover the eight opponents standing between them and a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026-27 Champions League.
