André Onana Agrees with Matic: his Mistakes Revived Olympique Lyon Against Manchester United
André Onana made two blunders that cost Manchester United a valuable victory against Olympique Lyon in the quarterfinals of the Europa League
If football is considered a sport of mistakes… the match between Olympique Lyon and Manchester United in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals was the perfect example. Especially due to André Onana, who, after some controversial statements in the lead-up to the match, which Matic responded to with firmness, made two blunders that cost Manchester United a valuable victory… and revived Olympique Lyon.

“Onana is one of the worst goalkeepers at Manchester United”
The first mistake came in the 25th minute from a lateral free kick taken by Thiago Almada that bounced right in front of him, and he failed to clear it, even though no player from Olympique Lyon was in position to shoot. The second, in stoppage time with Manchester United leading, was when he let a loose rebound in the small area that Rayan Cherki took advantage of to secure an equalizer for Olympique Lyon.
There have been many times since he signed with Manchester United that André Onana has made mistakes that cost his team points. This situation was something Nemanja Matic warned about in the lead-up to the match when he found out that Onana had said "Manchester United was a better team than Lyon": "When you're one of the worst goalkeepers in the history of Manchester United, you have to be careful with what you say. If it was van der Sar, Schmeichel, or De Gea, fine. But Onana is one of the worst."
No goalkeeper makes more mistakes than Onana
These were damning comments from Matic, who, although Onana later tried to downplay them, ultimately condemned the Manchester United goalkeeper with two mistakes that solidify him as the goalkeeper in the Premier League who has made the most errors (8) this season across all competitions. This record is far from that of the fourth most expensive goalkeeper in history (50 million euros), behind only Kepa Arrizabalaga (80), Alisson (62), and Buffon (53).
Rúben Amorim, nonetheless, tried to show his support for André Onana after these last two mistakes: “When a player makes a mistake, the whole team makes a mistake.” However, he wasn’t definitive when asked if he still trusts Onana: “We will continue working hard and improving. If you look at the season, I have made more mistakes than the players in recent months. If you play many games, it can happen that you make mistakes.”
