Ruben Amorim vs Alejandro Garnacho: The internal fight fueling Manchester United’s crisis
The mood at Manchester United couldn’t be more tense after their 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final. Instead of calming things down, the defeat sparked a heated clash between forward Alejandro Garnacho and coach Rúben Amorim, with sharp words revealing a fractured relationship.
Trouble in the locker room
“It’s been tough for everyone after a disastrous season. We lost the final and didn’t beat anyone in the league. It’s been really hard. We’ll try to finish strong and see what happens,” said Garnacho, visibly frustrated. He also questioned his playing time: “I played all through the Europa League, and today only 20 minutes… I don’t know.” His comments hinted at uncertainty about his future at the club, adding to the growing unrest among the ‘Red Devils.’
Rather than backing down, Amorim fired back bluntly: “It’s easy to say now. Who missed a clear chance in the semis? Garnacho. That’s football,” the Portuguese coach shot back. On his own future, he added: “If the board thinks I’m not the right man, I’ll leave without compensation. But I’m not quitting — I trust my work.”
Rising tension
The conflict escalated when Robert Garnacho, Alejandro’s brother and agent, took to social media: “Working like a pro, helping in every game, scoring in recent finals, just to play 19 minutes and get thrown under the bus. Wow.” This message showed the family’s frustration and fanned the internal crisis even more.
With the team out of European competitions next season and sitting 16th in the Premier League, Manchester United is facing a sporting and institutional crisis. The futures of both Garnacho and Amorim seem uncertain. The summer transfer window could bring crucial decisions for a club that, for now, is struggling to find its way.
