Mourinho says defeat 'a good result' for Fenerbahce as Cerny nets twice for Rangers
Jose Mourinho says Fenerbahce's Europa League last-16 tie against Rangers is not over yet despite his side's 3-1 first-leg defeat at home.
Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho said his side's 3-1 defeat at home to Rangers in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie was "a good result".
With the return leg set to be held in Glasgow next Thursday, the Portuguese coach remains confident the tie is far from over.
"We were very bad everywhere," Mourinho told TNT Sports after the defeat in Istanbul.
"I don't think it's fair to say we were bad defensively, because we were very bad everywhere.
"Maybe you laugh, but for me, it was a good result because of the way we performed. The result could have been bigger than this one."
Rangers made a fast start as Mohamed Diomande capitalised on a defensive error from Sebastian Szymanski and played through Cyriel Dessers, who opened the scoring inside six minutes.
But the home side levelled on the half-hour mark through a delightful volley from Alexander Djiku.
Vaclav Cerny then restored Rangers' lead at the end of a quick break before the half-time interval.
Dessers was denied by the offside flag, but Rangers still ended the first leg with a two-goal cushion as Cerny netted his second with nine minutes remaining.
"Defensively we made incredible, incredible mistakes," Mourinho said.
"They defend a lot with a very low block and then dangerous counters, and we had no pace to follow that.
"So for me, I have to say that we deserved a punishment of this result. If someone wants to ask me if it's over, no, I don't think it's over."
Rangers interim boss Barry Ferguson, meanwhile, remained cautious, reminding his players that it is only half-time in the two-legged tie.
"The commitment, the desire, at times some of the football we played was very good," Ferguson said.
"We've got to remember, it's only half-time in the tie because Fenerbahce have got one of the best managers that's ever been.
"We need to be ready for next Thursday and, I tell you something, I'll have them ready."
Lyon are in the same position as Rangers after their own 3-1 away win over FCSB in Bucharest.
After Nicolas Tagliafico's first-half opener for Lyon was cancelled out by Alexandru Baluta in the second half, it looked as though the game was heading for a stalemate until substitute Malick Fofana scored twice in the final five minutes to give the visitors the upper hand.
It was Lyon's first game since coach Paulo Fonseca was suspended for almost nine months for his confrontation with a referee.
The 52-year-old is not allowed to conduct his matchday duties until November 30 after he pushed his head towards referee Benoit Millot during Lyon's 2-1 win over Brest last weekend.
