Real Sociedad 1-1 Manchester United: Oyarzabal penalty snatches first-leg draw
This Europa League tie is finely poised heading to Old Trafford, with nothing to split Real Sociedad and Manchester United at halfway.
Real Sociedad set up a finely poised second leg of their Europa League last-16 tie as Mikel Oyarzabal's penalty earned a 1-1 home draw against Manchester United.
Joshua Zirkzee had broken the deadlock for the visitors, but Bruno Fernandes was penalised for a handball in the box, with the resulting spot-kick restoring parity.
United had the better chances in the first half and arguably should have had a half-time lead. Diogo Dalot picked out Fernandes on the penalty spot, but his first-time effort was blocked on the line, before Alex Remiro denied Zirkzee, who then flicked the rebound wide.
The visitors came out of the blocks quickly in the second half, with Alejandro Garnacho firing into the side-netting, before Zirkzee broke the deadlock. Rasmus Hojlund's run excellently opened up the space, with the Dutchman curling Garnacho's cross in first-time.
However, against the run of play, La Real were given a lifeline. Fernandes jumped to clear his lines, but the ball struck his raised arm, with a VAR review seeing the spot-kick given.
Oyarzabal coolly stepped up from 12 yards, stuttering his run-up to wrong-foot Andre Onana, before curling his penalty to the left and sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
La Real searched for a winner late on, with Onana making smart saves to deny Brais Mendez and Orri Oskarsson, who had earlier seen a poked shot fly wide of the post from very close range.
Data Debrief: On the spot
United remain unbeaten in the Europa League under Ruben Amorim, but the Red Devils may feel slightly hard done by on the penalty decision.
It was the third penalty given away by Fernandes for United in all competitions and his second in the Europa League, having also conceded one against Barcelona in February 2023.
Oyarzabal then made no mistake from the spot, netting his 11th goal in major European competition for La Real, more than any other player for the club.
United had the better chances in the first half but once again struggled to take their opportunities. After scoring in the first half of each of Amorim's first three games in charge, they have now only done so in three of 21 outings since.
