The Europa League third qualifying round match between FC Salzburg and Pafos FC was suspended after heavy rainfall made conditions unplayable at the Red Bull Arena.

The referee stopped the match after just 16 minutes as the waterlogged pitch prevented normal play.

Persistent rain left large areas of the field covered in water, making it impossible for the ball to move properly and preventing the match from continuing under normal conditions.

Officials decided to suspend the game after determining that play could not safely continue.

Salzburg joked about the conditions

FC Salzburg's official X account reacted with humor to the situation by posting:

"It's actually football. Right now it's more like water polo. The match has been suspended! The massive amount of rain is making orderly football impossible at the moment."

The post quickly drew attention as it perfectly captured the extraordinary conditions at the Red Bull Arena.
