“It wasn’t to protect him physically, because he was fit to play for as long as I wanted,” he said.

That was when Jorge Jesus decided he needed a different type of player rather than introducing his captain.

“The match continued to develop and it was no longer the right moment for Cris to come on; instead, we needed another player to guarantee balance and the result,” he explained.

The coach insisted that leaving him on the bench was simply a decision based on what the match required and not a sign that Cristiano had permanently lost his place within the national team.

“It was a decision. I didn’t think it was the ideal moment, I needed a player with different characteristics, but that doesn’t mean he is out of the picture — quite the opposite,” he said.

Cristiano Could Return Against Denmark

The next opportunity for Cristiano Ronaldo could arrive very soon.

Portugal will continue its UEFA Nations League campaign against Denmark, and Jorge Jesus himself opened the door for his captain to return to action.

“Maybe now, against Denmark, he will play,” the Portuguese coach said.

This time, the manager’s plan worked. Portugal defeated Norway 2-1, Gonçalo Ramos responded with a goal and the Portuguese side recorded its second consecutive victory in the competition.

For Cristiano Ronaldo, however, the night produced a statistic that would have been difficult to imagine after more than two decades with the national team: since that defeat against Switzerland at Euro 2008, he had not finished an official Portugal match on the bench without playing a single minute while available.
