FPF Makes Its Position Clear on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Future

  • Pedro Proença played down the controversy and made Portugal’s position clear regarding the future of its captain.

Portugal Tries to Ease the Tension

Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the Portugal camp raised fresh questions about his international future, but the Portuguese Football Federation is trying to calm the situation.

The dispute began after Jorge Jesus left the forward on the bench during the 2-1 Nations League win over Norway. The situation escalated further when Cristiano subsequently left the national team camp.

Now Pedro Proença, president of the FPF, says what happened was a “misunderstanding” that needs to be resolved behind closed doors.

“He Will Always Be Part of This Squad”

Proença defended the Portugal captain and made it clear that, as long as he remains fit enough to compete, Cristiano will continue to have the door open.

“We are talking about the greatest player of all time, a player who has given more than two decades to Portuguese soccer,” he said in comments reported by ESPN.

“He will always be part of this squad if he is technically fit to play. Cristiano knows this. He knows that is the sentiment. What happened was a misunderstanding that needs to be resolved internally,” he added.

FPF Insists Cristiano Still Wants to Be There

The federation president also recalled that Cristiano could have ended his international career after the World Cup but decided to continue.

“Ronaldo is a symbol of our country. He is a Portuguese icon, an absolutely extraordinary player who could have ended his international career after the World Cup but chose not to out of love for the national team,” Proença explained.

The forward has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal and remains the leading scorer in the history of international soccer.

Will Cristiano Ronaldo Return for Portugal?

While the controversy continued off the field, Portugal closed the international window with strong results, including a 4-2 win over Denmark, and finished the period with 12 points from a possible 12 in their Nations League group.

The big question now is whether Cristiano will return when the national team reconvenes. For now, the federation’s public stance is clear: they do not consider his international chapter closed and want to resolve the dispute internally.

Everything will depend on how talks develop between the captain, Jorge Jesus and the FPF ahead of the next squad announcement.
