Ter Stegen Sends a Message to Barcelona

Marc-André ter Stegen is rebuilding his career away from Barcelona. After returning to the Germany goal and emerging as one of the standout performers against the Netherlands, the goalkeeper praised Hansi Flick's side for its spectacular start to the season.

Ter Stegen Feels Important Again

There was a point when the road seemed to be getting too long for Marc-André ter Stegen.

Injuries, a lack of playing time and his absence from the most recent FIFA World Cup put the German through one of the most difficult periods of his career.

Now, the story is beginning to change.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper returned between the posts for Germany in a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League, in Jürgen Klopp's debut as Germany head coach.

Ter Stegen delivered an impressive performance and came very close to celebrating his return with a victory before Cody Gakpo scored the equalizer for the Dutch in stoppage time.

Beyond the result, the match represented something far more important: his return to the national team after 15 months and the opportunity to prove that he still wants to be Germany's first-choice goalkeeper.

Klopp Already Considers Him His No. 1

His return does not appear to be simply a reward for his career, either.

Klopp was very clear from his first squad announcement.

The new Germany coach considers Ter Stegen his first choice between the posts and explained that a national team needs stability in key positions.

For the goalkeeper, it represents another opportunity after spending much of his international career in the shadow of Manuel Neuer.

“My goal is always to be the No. 1 goalkeeper. I always want to be in the best possible condition and live up to that responsibility,” he said after the match, according to Sport.

The challenge now will be to keep that position.

Ajax Gave Him Something He Needed: Playing Time

His loan move to Ajax ultimately became a necessary change.

Barcelona confirmed on August 4 that Ter Stegen would spend the season on loan in Amsterdam until June 30, 2027. There, he was reunited with Míchel, a coach he had already worked with during his brief loan spell at Girona.

More importantly, he regained playing time.

Before leaving, he had endured several seasons disrupted by serious physical problems, including the knee injury that kept him out for 223 days and a subsequent operation to address his back problems.

That lack of continuity also eventually affected his situation with Germany.

Today, the picture is different.

He is playing regularly for Ajax, he is back with the national team and he has Klopp's confidence.

Ter Stegen Has Not Forgotten Barcelona

Changing shirts does not mean leaving 12 years of history behind.

Asked about Barcelona's spectacular start to the season, Ter Stegen did not hide how he feels about his former locker room.

“Right now, they're unstoppable. And that's what I wish for them,” the goalkeeper said in post-match comments reported by Sport.

He also praised the work Hansi Flick continues to do and acknowledged that he still follows the Blaugrana's results from afar.

But he immediately made an important distinction.

He is at another club now.

His present belongs to Ajax, and his priority is to fully rediscover the version of himself that made him one of Barcelona's most important players for years.

That is no small detail considering everything he achieved in Catalonia.

Ter Stegen has made 423 official appearances for Barcelona and won 21 trophies, including the Champions League in 2015. He is also the second-highest foreign appearance maker in club history, behind only Lionel Messi.

His future after the loan spell will still have to be decided.

For now, however, the German has achieved something he needed far more: playing regularly again, returning to his national team and feeling important once more.

And while he tries to rebuild his own story in Amsterdam, he continues to celebrate Barcelona's success from afar.
