Tuchel planning to contact 60 players over England omission
After qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, England boss Thomas Tuchel will now take the time to contact players who did not make his squad.
England boss Thomas Tuchel plans to contact players who have been left out of his recent Three Lions squads and help them back into contention for next summer's World Cup.
Tuchel led England to a flawless qualifying campaign for FIFA's flagship tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, winning all eight of their Group K fixtures.
They did so without conceding for just the second time, having also achieved the feat ahead of the 1990 World Cup, while the Three Lions' 2-0 win over Albania saw them put together 11 consecutive wins in competitive matches for the first time.
England have also now won their last 10 competitive matches to nil, equalling the record by a European nation, with Spain doing so between October 2014 and June 2016.
But stars of recent squads were left watching at home, with the likes of Real Madrid's Trent Alexander-Arnold and Everton's Jack Grealish not included in Tuchel's latest plans.
Alexander-Arnold has started eight of Madrid's 12 games in all competitions this season, but has registered just one assist for Xabi Alonso's LaLiga leaders.
Grealish, meanwhile, has failed to register a goal contribution in his last three Premier League games, but still leads the way for assists in the competition in 2025-26 (four, level with Mohammed Kudus and Quilindschy Hartman).
"First of all, it's my job now to make contact with everyone," Tuchel said.
"Players like Trent, players that are on our long list, 55, 60 players, to reach out to them, be in touch with them, explain to them why they were not here.
"Explain to them what they have to do, where they can improve. Can they even do something or is it just a choice, so this is my job in the next weeks and months."
Among others not included in Tuchel's final squad of 2025 were Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker, who have amassed 194 international caps between them.
Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly and AC Milan's Ruben Loftus-Cheek were also dropped in the latest squad.
Tuchel also opted against a first England recall since 2018 for Brighton's Danny Welbeck, whose six Premier League goals this season is a total only bettered by Manchester City's Erling Haaland (14) and Brentford's Igor Thiago (eight).
Asked whether he is going to make a lot of phone calls, Tuchel said: "Yeah, and I hate phone calls.
"Better on FaceTime. Then I see the expression, at least, and get a feeling for the person. Or I need to visit them, visit training, training grounds.
"We can do group visits. We can do Jude [Bellingham] and Trent. And visit the clubs. And some of them we will call. Let's see.
"Listen, we've just finished this camp and I think it's important that I reach out to everyone, even to the guys we didn't pick so regularly to tell them where they are and give them honest feedback."
