Tuchel says England played with fear of losing at Euro 2024
England will play their first game under Thomas Tuchel on Friday, and the new boss is hoping to instil a fearless approach.
Thomas Tuchel believes England played with a fear of losing, rather than excitement about winning, at Euro 2024.
Speaking ahead of his first game as Three Lions boss, at home to Albania in a World Cup qualifier on Friday, Tuchel promised his team will be different.
"It was my feeling in front of the TV before I knew I'd be in charge," Tuchel said when asked if England played within themselves. "It has to be the other way around.
"I want us to play with the excitement and hunger and joy to win. Acceptance of failure is a part of it in football.
"You want to implement this togetherness and the joy that everyone feels safe to express themselves and give their very best. Play with the joy to win and not the fear to lose.
"Gareth [Southgate] did excellent. At the Euros, they were not free enough to express themselves in a stable structure. But England wasn't the only team to change structure from match to match.
"We need to bond a little better, find more rhythm and better connections on the field."
England were criticised for their performances despite reaching the Euros final in their last tournament under Southgate, only scoring eight goals from chances worth 6.15 expected goals (xG) in seven matches.
Final conquerors Spain, by contrast, totalled 13.01 xG and scored 15 goals.
Tuchel wants his England team to play with a defined attacking style, but he is also wary of the need to remain adaptable in international football.
"Offensively, we will try for sure to implement our style and structure from now on," he said. "We'll put players into positions where they feel comfortable and can express themselves to their full potential.
"But in modern football, and with the quality of the opponent in Albania, and the respect you have to give every opponent, especially off the ball, it's necessary that we stay open to adapt – structurally or in the lineup.
"We can't be ignorant and say we do what we want and everyone will adapt to us.
"Everyone will try to find solutions against us, so we want to be adaptable to the qualities of our opponent, and that starts on Friday."
Each of the last 10 England managers have won their first game in charge since Bobby Robson oversaw a 1-1 draw with Denmark in 1982.
The only permanent manager to lose his first game was World Cup-winning boss Alf Ramsey in 1963, versus France.
While former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Tuchel is still adapting to the international calendar, he is excited by the prospect of working with such a talented squad.
"It's a crash course for me in international football and how to adapt to the rhythm and being together with the squad for only 10 days," he said.
"But they reminded me instantly why I was so excited about the job. It's because of them.
"Good energy, good atmosphere. That's what I love the most, to be around players and implement ideas on the pitch and adapt to their characters, strengths and talent."
