Brazil Regrets Neymar's Absence Days Before Facing Colombia and Argentina
Neymar's absence, ruled out at the last minute due to a muscle injury, has left a significant void in the Brazilian national team locker room. The squad was eagerly anticipating the return of their star player, as midfielder Bruno Guimarães expressed on Tuesday.
"We'll feel his absence. We'll try to give our best, but there's no doubt it's a major loss," said the Newcastle player during a press conference in Brasília, ahead of Brazil's World Cup 2026 qualifying match against Colombia.
Neymar: An Indisputable Leader
Guimarães highlighted Neymar's importance both on and off the field. "He's a fundamental player for the locker room, a leader, and the best Brazilian footballer of the last decade," he stated.
The forward, currently with Santos, sustained a muscle injury in the back of his thigh, thwarting his anticipated return to the national team. Neymar has not played for the Canarinha since October 2023, when a severe knee injury — including a torn ACL and meniscus — sidelined him.
Self-Criticism and Optimism
Guimarães also acknowledged the need for Brazil to improve its performance. "We know we can play better than we have been," he admitted. However, he urged patience from the media and fans, emphasizing that the team is undergoing a significant "restructuring" process under coach Dorival Júnior.
Upcoming Challenges: Colombia and Argentina
The Canarinha faces two critical challenges. The matches against Colombia and Argentina will be decisive in confirming the team's progress and securing qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
"Our biggest opponent is ourselves. We know what we have: one of the best squads, with great players in every position," said Guimarães.
He also acknowledged the challenge Colombia poses, having shown their intense pressing game during the recent Copa América. "We know they'll be tough, but the key will be to unleash our full potential on the pitch," the midfielder concluded.
With uncertainty surrounding Neymar's return, Brazil approaches these matches determined to showcase their growth and keep their World Cup dreams alive.
