Lionel Scaloni calls up Lamine Yamal: "One of the best in the world right now"
The FC Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal "is possibly one of the best in the world right now," said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni on Monday, who didn't want to compare the beginnings of the Spanish international with those of Argentina's captain, Lionel Messi.
Lamine Yamal's impact on world football
In a press conference held at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) headquarters in Ezeiza (Buenos Aires Province) ahead of the match against Brazil, which is part of the 14th round of the 2026 World Cup South American qualifiers, Scaloni was asked about the young star from the Spanish national team, who secured a spot in the UEFA Nations League 'Final Four' this past Sunday.
"Lamine Yamal is possibly one of the best in the world today. We know what Leo Messi means for the world of football, but Yamal is doing very well in Spain. I don't feel qualified to compare their beginnings," said the Argentine coach, referencing the two players who grew up in FC Barcelona's youth system.
Luis de la Fuente’s work and European teams
Scaloni also praised Spain as "one of the best teams in the world, with a very clear playing style," and commended La Roja's coach, Luis de la Fuente, for "doing a great job." Additionally, the Argentine coach, who lives in Spain – where he played for Deportivo La Coruña, Mallorca, and Racing de Santander – reflected on his special connection with the country: "You all know what Spain means to me."
Regarding the Finalissima, which would feature the Copa América champions Argentina against the European champions Spain, Scaloni said he didn't know "if it will happen" and assured that he wasn't worried about it.
Match against Brazil and South American qualifiers
Argentina leads the South American 2026 World Cup qualifiers with 28 points, and on Tuesday, they will host Brazil, who are third with 21 points, aiming to secure their spot for the tournament in Canada, United States, and Mexico.
