Will Lionel Messi Play Against Colombia in the CONMEBOL Qualifiers?
Lionel Messi will return to Argentina’s starting XI this Tuesday against Colombia, in the final match of Matchday 16 of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, as confirmed by head coach Lionel Scaloni in a press conference.
Messi Back in the Starting Lineup
After missing the previous FIFA window due to injury and starting on the bench against Chile, Messi is set to lead the team from the start at River Plate’s stadium:
“Leo is going to start. We have no doubts. We hope the people enjoy him and the team,” said Scaloni from Argentina’s training base, named after the captain himself.
Scaloni Praises Colombia
The coach highlighted the strength of Tuesday’s opponent:
“They’re a very good team—one of the best. Sometimes statistics don’t reflect what’s really going on.”
He also underlined Argentina’s evolution:
“Today we can play the same way with or without Leo. Before, that was more difficult—we had to adjust more.”

Group Standings
- Argentina : 34 points – already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, sitting comfortably at the top of the table.
- Colombia : Currently sixth, in a tight race for a direct qualification spot and needing a result in Buenos Aires to stay in contention.
What’s Next for Argentina?
After this match, La Albiceleste will play two more qualifiers in September:
- 🏠 vs Venezuela
- 🛫 at Ecuador
With Messi back in the lineup, the stage is set for a special night at El Monumental. Will the world champion captain shine again in his return to official action after nearly seven months?
