Malawi Turns Its Dream Into a Historic Night

What began as Malawi's first-ever appearance at a Women's Africa Cup of Nations has now become one of the biggest stories of the 2026 edition.

The Scorchers defeated Ghana 2-1 in the quarter-finals, reached the semifinals of the competition for the first time and, even more importantly, secured the first FIFA Women's World Cup qualification in their history.

A goal from Rose Kadzere in the 79th minute ultimately decided a match that began uphill for Malawi and once again demonstrated this team's ability to compete against some of the continent's top sides.

Ghana Struck First

The Black Queens made the better start and needed just seven minutes to take the lead.

Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah opened the scoring in the seventh minute, putting Ghana in a strong position to return to the WAFCON semifinals.

However, Malawi's response was almost immediate.

Just five minutes later, Temwa Chawinga appeared inside the box to make it 1-1, restoring parity and once again underlining her enormous influence in the Scorchers' attack.

VAR Changed the Course of the Match

Doris Boaduwaa managed to put the ball into the net and Ghana thought they had regained the lead, but the play was reviewed by VAR and the goal was eventually ruled out.

The Black Queens continued searching for openings and introduced fresh attacking options, but Malawi's defense held firm while the Scorchers continued to threaten whenever they found opportunities to break on the counterattack.

The tension increased as the minutes passed because more than just a place among Africa's final four was at stake: victory also meant automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.

Rose Kadzere Steps Up to Change History

In the 79th minute, Rose Kadzere found space inside the box and finished past the Ghana goalkeeper, making it 2-1 and leaving the Scorchers just minutes away from achieving something that, until very recently, had seemed unimaginable.

Ghana pushed forward in search of an equalizer and committed more players into the opposition half during the closing stages, but Malawi managed to protect their lead until the final whistle.

Then the celebrations began.

Ghana Still Have One Last Chance

For the Black Queens, the defeat ended their hopes of securing direct World Cup qualification, but not all of their chances of returning to the tournament for the first time since 2007.

Ghana will now face Ivory Coast in the African playoff. The winner will advance to the FIFA inter-confederation playoffs, where they will have another opportunity to earn a place at Brazil 2027.

For Malawi, however, the wait is over.

From continental debutants to semifinalists and World Cup qualifiers in a matter of weeks, the Scorchers have already ensured that their first WAFCON appearance will be remembered as one of the most remarkable campaigns in the tournament's recent history.
