Ghana looks to make a commanding start

Ghana is making its 12th appearance at the WAFCON, with only Nigeria, South Africa, and Cameroon having featured more times in the competition.

The Black Queens have reached the final on three occasions and finished third in the previous edition after defeating South Africa in the bronze-medal match.

Kim Björkegren’s side also has a strong record in opening matches, with seven wins, two draws, and only two defeats in its previous 11 appearances.

Cape Verde makes a historic debut

Cape Verde is experiencing an unforgettable day as it becomes the second island nation to compete in WAFCON history, following Réunion’s appearance in 2000.

The Cape Verdean national team secured its first qualification after overcoming Guinea and Mali in the qualifiers.

After losing 1-0 at home to Mali in the first leg of the final round, Cape Verde produced a remarkable comeback by winning 4-2 away and advancing 4-3 on aggregate.
