The Tribute to Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros
On May 25th, Roland Garros will witness one of the most emotional moments in its history with a special tribute to the legendary Rafael Nadal. It will take place on the iconic Philippe-Chatrier court, just after the day’s play, when the greatest champion of the tournament will be honored. This will be part of the special events scheduled for this edition of the French Open.
A Long-Awaited Tribute
Amélie Mauresmo, the tournament director, confirmed the news: “Rafa Nadal has left his mark on the history of the French Open in many ways, which is why we will hold a tribute ceremony in his honor. We want this tribute to be special, exceptional. We want it to be a surprise for everyone.” She also revealed that they had planned to pay tribute to him last year, but "he refused at that time. He wasn't sure it would be his last Roland Garros. Now that he is retired, he is happy to receive it."
The president of the French Tennis Federation, Gilles Moretton, also highlighted the importance of this tribute and the unique connection between the Spaniard and the tournament: "Rafael Nadal and Roland Garros are inseparable. We have a strong history together," he expressed. Both leaders recently met with Nadal to finalize the details of the ceremony, though they prefer to keep some surprises for the big day.
Nadal's Legacy at Roland Garros
Rafa Nadal, who last played Roland Garros in 2024, losing to Alexander Zverev in the first round, won the tournament 14 times between 2005 and 2022. This incredible record makes him the most successful player on clay and a living legend of the event. His dominance has been so strong that he even has a statue at the tournament grounds.
In addition to the on-court tribute, the Spanish tennis player will also be featured in a special exhibition at the tournament’s official museum, the Tenniseum, offering an immersive experience for fans. He will also lend his voice to the promotional trailer for this edition, remaining present in the atmosphere of an event that has been synonymous with his career.
“The idea is to have a vision for the future, but also to celebrate those who have thrilled us in the past, and inevitably, there is a place among them for Rafael Nadal,” concluded Mauresmo. Roland Garros 2025 will not only welcome the stars of today but will also pay tribute to the one who forever marked the tournament.
