Tottenham complete loan signing of highly-rated teen Tel from Bayern
Tottenham have bolstered their attacking ranks with the loan signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich until the end of the season.
Tottenham have beaten off Premier League competition to secure the signing of Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel on loan for the rest of the 2024-25 season.
The likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United were also interested in the 19-year-old's signature, but he has chosen to link up with Spurs to bolster their attacking ranks, reportedly making a U-turn after initially rejecting a move to them earlier this month.
Tottenham also have the option to make the deal permanent in the summer for €55million (£45.7m) on a six-year deal should he impress during his time in north London.
Tel started his career at Ligue 1 side Rennes, making his league debut at 16 years and 110 days old against Brest, becoming the youngest player to appear for the club in the top-flight, breaking the record previously held by Eduardo Camavinga.
He would go on to make 10 senior appearances for the French side across all competitions before completing a reported €28.5 million switch to Bayern in 2022.
The teenager scored his first goal for the club in a 5-0 win over Viktoria Koln in the DFB-Pokal, becoming the youngest goalscorer for the club in a competitive match, aged 17 years and 126 days old.
Tel would go on to enjoy his best scoring season for Bayern in 2023-24 under Thomas Tuchel, netting 10 goals and laying on a further six assists across 41 outings in all competitions, but has found game time hard to come by under Vincent Kompany.
He has made just 14 appearances this campaign, only four of which have been from the start, totalling just 458 minutes of action in all competitions.
It offers Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham another option in attack for the remainder of the season, with the likes of Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert all currently out with injuries that have plagued Spurs' campaign.
Tel became Tottenham's fourth signing of the January window following the permanent additions of Antonin Kinsky and Min-hyeok Yang, with the latter now having joined QPR on loan. Lens defender Kevin Danso also completed a temporary deal until the end of the season on Sunday.
A potential debut in Thursday's EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool at Anfield could come too soon for Tel, with the move still subject to international clearance and the Frenchman securing a work permit, though he could feature in Sunday's FA Cup clash against Aston Villa.
