Super tight promotion race takes another twist
Hambuer SV is top of the 2.Bundesliga table today after beating Hertha Berlin 3-2 to end another thrilling weekend of action in Germany's second tier.
There are less than 10 points separating the division's top 12 teams in an insanely tight race that becomes increasingly impossible to predict as each matchday passes.
Hambuirg had led its host 2-0 after an hour thanks to goals from Davie Selke and Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer, but Hertha roared back to 2-2 through strikes from Michael Cuisance and Marten Winkler, setting up a grandstand finish.
Emir Sahiti netted the winner with just six minutes left of normal time remaining to secure all three points for the visitors, and keep their push for promotion right on track.
While Hamburg leads the pack for now, it has the same number of points as (34) as second-placed FC Cologne, which secured a late 1-0 win over Elversberg thanks to a goal from Dejan Ljubicic.
Elversberg, which is eighth on the table on 28 points, finished the match with 10 men when Elias Baum was dismissed in stoppage-time after committing a second yellow-card offence.
Magdeburg lost ground on the leaders after a disappointing 1-1 draw against second-bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig put it on 32 points, dropping from first to fourth place.
Baris Atik fired home a stunner inside the first five minutes for Magdeburg, but it failed to build on its perfect start, failing to finish numerous chances in front of goal.
That woud bite later in the game when with Lino Tempelmann equalised from the penalty spot, and the visitors held on for a point to aid their battle against relegation.
Kaiserlautern in fourth is level on 32 points with Magdeburg after it beat Greuther Furth 4-2 in their clash, and fifth-placed Fortuna Dusseldorf also bagged a win with a 3-2 result at seventh-placed Karlsruher SC, those teams on 30 and 29 points respectively.
In a mid-table stoush, Schalke narrowed the gap to FC Nurnberg to just one point thanks to a 3-1 home win, piling the pressure on Munster and bottom side Jahn Regensburg ahead of their matches on Monday (AEDT).
