Kane double helps five-star Bayern crush HSV
Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich dismantled former European champion Hamburg SV 5-0 in the Bundesliga to make it three wins from three this season.
The Bavarian side, which will host Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League next week, needed only 29 minutes to put the game to bed, scoring four times as it celebrated another goal bonanza in a home game against Hamburg, which has now conceded 55 goals in its past nine trips to Munich.
Bayern is top of the standings on nine points, two ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, a 2-0 winner at Heidenheim.
"There are no easy matches. You have to carve out that momentum. We have played ourselves into a good position, not only against Hamburg, and we are going into the next game [against Chelsea] which is again at home, with a lot of confidence," Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said after the game.
"It worked well in the first half and in the second half we controlled the game and scored another goal. I am happy with the result. Clean sheet, five goals scored, a great feeling, great atmosphere," he said.
Hamburg, back in the Bundesliga after a seven-season spell in the second division, had planned to put up a fight but its hopes were crushed after three minutes when Serge Gnabry drilled in from a tight angle to put the hosts in front.
Aleksandar Pavlovic doubled that lead six minutes later before a 26th-minute Kane penalty made it 3-0.
By that time Bayern was outclassing its opponent in almost every attacking move and Luis Diaz then also got on the scoresheet with a deflected effort another three minutes later.
The hosts, who introduced new signing Nicolas Jackson – on loan from Chelsea – in the second half, took its foot off the gas after the break but still scored again, with Kane bagging his fifth league goal just after the hour mark before Michael Olise hit the woodwork late in the game.
Colombia international Diaz, who joined from Liverpool this season in a €70 million ($123.5 million), has now scored in his first three Bundesliga matches for Bayern.
Gnabry explained how it is all just clicking for a team that has already plundered 14 league goals this season.
"Overall, things are going very well for us as a team; it's a lot of fun," he said.
"We play well together, move the ball around well, and have a perfect understanding – it just works. Honestly, I don't know why I scored my goal – but today it just went in.
"I'm in a good mood right now, training as usual, pushing hard. But as an athlete, you also need a certain amount of luck on your side to make things work out.
"Last year, after a good phase, my knee slowed me down a bit. Now I'm healthy, feel good, have confidence — and right now, I'm in the flow."
"Keeping a clean sheet and scoring five goals – that was impressive," Kompany added.
"The atmosphere in the stadium was simply fantastic. It was almost like an Oktoberfest feeling, and it was really fun. We started well, which always helps.
"Everything went smoothly in the first half; we could perhaps have done a bit more in the second. But we played well, controlled the game, and added another goal. In the end, it's a very good result.
"You can see that we're getting along better and better; a lot of things have settled in now. We've worked hard for the wins so far, so we deserve them."
Bayern's focus now turns to the UEFA Champions League, as its starts its campaign against Chelsea on Thursday (AEST).
