Coquimbo stuns Universitario to silence Monumental
Coquimbo Unido pulled off a stunning upset at one of South America's most iconic stadiums, silencing a packed Estadio Monumental to claim a famous victory over Universitario in their Copa Libertadores Group B clash.
The Peruvian side arrived with confidence after winning the local clasico and picking up a point in Ibague on matchday one, but was left bitterly disappointed on home soil.
The visitors showed no sign of their continental inexperience, striking first when Cristian Zavala opened the scoring, poking home at the back post in the 13th minute to silence the home crowd.
Universitario struggled to respond with any real clarity despite dominating possession, and Nicolas Johansen doubled the advantage just four minutes into the second half, arriving in the six-yard box to tap home and effectively end the contest.
Universitario has just one point from its two matches so far and dropped to the bottom of Group B on goal difference after this result.
Coquimbo Unido joins Nacional at the top with four points, a remarkable achievement for the competition debutant.
Elsewhere, LDU Quito sealed a routine 2-0 victory over a disappointing Mirassol to stay perfect in Group G with two wins from two, inflciting a first defeat of the campaign on the Brazilian side.
