River roars back to secure draw at Independiente
River Plate came back from the dead to draw 2-2 at Independiente del Valle in the Copa Libertadores, recovering from a two-goal deficit to grab a point that puts it on top of Group B.
For much of the match, it looked like Independiente would be the side to finish the match on top of the group after sensational first half against the Argentinian giant.
Claudio Spinelli netted a double inside six first-half minutes, tapping home on 24 minutes to open the scoring before meeting a superb cross from the left from Layan Loor to make it 2-0 on the half-hour.
The hosts created a host of chances to move further ahead, but their failure to do ultimately proved costly.
Giuliano Galoppo was first to strike for River, reacting quickest to bury a rebound after home goalkeeper Guido Villar had saved Manuel Lanzini's initial shot.
River's second came after Independiente failed to deal with a corner, Sebastian Driussi poking home from close range after a bit of pinball in the box.
River Plate leads the group at the halfway stage of the first phase on five points, with Independiente in second place on four points.
