Reims sees off brave Cannes to set up PSG final
Reims will play Paris Saint-Germain in the Coupe de France final in May after beating brave fourth-tier outfit Cannes 2-1 in their semi-final.
It is the first time Reims has been to the final of the competition since 1977, but it was no easy ride for the Ligue 1 visitors to get past their amateur hosts.
Cannes – which won this trophy in 1932 and produced Zinedine Zidane and Patrick Vieira – finished the game with 17 shots to Reims's 10 and had a 62 per cent share of the possession.
But a combination of inaccurate finishing and excellent goalkeeping from Yehvann Diouf meant the dream of a final against PSG came to an end for a club that has had a tumultuous fall from grace over the past decade.
Cannes almost took the lead in the second minute when Junya Ito’s shot had to be tipped behind by Diouf before Almike N’Diaye cleared Cedric Kipre’s header off the line.
But in the 14th minute, 19-year-old Hafiz Ibrahim scored his first goal for Reims to put the visitors ahead, courtesy of an excellent run and assist from Mamadou Diakhon.
It was not long after the restart, though, when Cannes drew level from a set-piece, Cheikh N'Doye rising highest to head the ball into the back of the net via a deflection on the line as Reims tried in vain to clear.
Reims got ahead again, though, when a defensive error from a throw-in saw the ball land at the feet of an unmarked Teddy Teuma inside the box, and he made no mistake with the opportunity.
That sparked a surge of attacks from the home side, and Diouf was forced into a number of saves to keep Reims in the game, not least when he somehow got a hand to Julien Domingues's header from point-blank range.
Try as they might, the visitors could not find another goal, but have left the competition with their heads held high.
For Reims, a final against France's best team awaits at Stade de France on 24 May.
