Nico Williams renews with Athletic until 2035
Spain star Nico Williams has ended any speculation on his future by signing a long-term contract with Athletic Club which ties him to the club until 2035.
Williams, 22, scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in 45 competitive appearances fot Athletic last season, and his previous contract was set to expire in 2027.
Amid links LaLiga rival Barcelona, Williams decided to commit to the Bilbao club for a further eight years, and his release clause, which was reported to be around €58 million ($104.3 million), has also been increased by 50 per cent as part of his new contract, the club announced.
"When decisions have to be made, for me, what weighs most is the heart," Williams said after signing his new deal.
"I'm where I want to be, with my people, this is my home. Aupa Athletic!"
Nico Williams joined Athletic as an Alevín player in the 2013-2014 season, a year after his older brother Inaki had arrived.
He made his debut in April, 2021, aged 18 and has since made 167 appearances, winning the Copa del Rey in 2024, which was Athletic's first major trophy in four decades.
Williams has also had major success at international level with Spain, winning the UEFA Euro 2024 title and being named the most valuable player in the final against England.
