Romero wants to make history at Atletico Madrid
Cristian Romero has completed his transfer to Atletico Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur, and he has big ambitions with the LaLiga club.
The Argentina international completed a reported €40 million ($65.3 million) move after five seasons with Spurs in the Premier League, for whom he made 156 appearances.
The former club captain also helped the English side end its 17-year wait for a trophy as it won the UEFA Europa League in 2024-2025, defeating Manchester United in the final.
Romero's future has been in doubt with Spurs signing centre-backs Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi ahead of their first full season under Roberto De Zerbi.
Having been ruled out due to injury in the midst of Spurs' relegation battle last season, Romero was roundly criticised for deciding to return to Argentina instead of attending their crucial final-day meeting with Everton, a choice he eventually reversed.
Romero now wants to become an Atleti legend having signed a five-year contract with Los Colchoneros, and he knows the only way to do so is by winning silverware.
"I am very happy, very delighted to arrive here, at this huge club," Romero said after his official unveiling.
"I know I come with the same mentality as always, trying to write my name in the history of this beautiful club.
"I know the only way is by winning trophies, so I come with that mentality and I will give everything until the last day to achieve it.
"It's a club that, because of my style of play, fits me perfectly.
"There are many national team-mates here, and I know it's a wonderful club. When I played against them in the [UEFA] Champions League, the fans supporting them... a bit of everything made me make this decision to come here.
"I will give my absolute all, no doubt. In the end, football can go well or badly, but I know I'll be 100 per cent committed to this crest, to this shirt."
Atleti finished its pre-season campaign with a 2-1 win over Marseille on Saturday (AEST).
Diego Simeone's side faces Malaga in its LaLiga opener on Thursday (AEST), before hosting Villarreal next weekend.
