Reaching first final with Liverpool is 'special', says Slot
Liverpool will have their first chance to win silverware under Arne Slot next month after beating Tottenham to reach the EFL Cup final.
Arne Slot described reaching his first final with Liverpool as "special" after beating Tottenham to book their place at Wembley in the EFL Cup.
Liverpool overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit with a 4-0 thrashing of Spurs at Anfield on Thursday thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk.
In the process, the Reds reached their 15th EFL Cup final, five more than any other side, and they will face Newcastle United for the trophy on March 15.
They have also now progressed to the showpiece on three of the last four occasions in which they lost the first leg of a semi-final, having also done so in 2000-01 and 2002-03.
Though Slot was keen not to dwell on the result for too long with an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Plymouth Argyle coming up on Sunday, he was delighted to reach the final two.
"Pleasant!" he said when asked how it felt to reach his first final with the club. "Although if you know me a little bit, [you know] my thoughts are more on Sunday already than thinking about a final in a month.
"Our performance was something that pleased me most. Reaching a final should always be special, even for this club.
"This club is used to playing finals, but still then we are working very hard every single day to try to improve players – and the players want to improve themselves every single day – but we are also in this business to play finals.
"We already know how difficult the final is going to be because we faced Newcastle already, and they were very impressive [against Arsenal] as well."
Tottenham failed to register a single shot on target against Liverpool, the first time that has happened under Ange Postecoglou.
In fact, Spurs managed just five shots overall worth 0.18 expected goals (xG), though they did hit the woodwork late on through Son Heung-min, minutes before Van Dijk scored Liverpool's fourth.
"Very impressive," Slot added. "I think, I am not saying anything strange, Tottenham are conceding goals because they have so many injury problems.
"That is probably the main reason why they are conceding goals – but they are always able to score goals as well and create a lot. For us to be so aggressive without the ball, it doesn't tell you anything about Tottenham [and the way they attacked], that should tell you a lot about our work rate without the ball.
"That's what stood out for me. To play against a team that is so good in creating chances, only conceding one [chance of note], in the end, [is] a good accomplishment."
