Walsall seals Wembley final as Spireites crumble
Walsall confirmed its place in the EFL League Two play-off final at Wembley after a stirring 2-1 semi-final second leg victory over Chesterfield delighted its home fans at Bescot Stadium as it sealed a 4-1 aggregate victory.
The Saddlers were 2-0 up after the first leg and looked by far the better side in the opening exchanges, but they were unable to breach the Spireites defence in the first half.
Chesterfield also created chances as it grew into the game midway through the first period, but its chances were also not good enough to trouble the home side.
It wasn't until the 81st minute that the deadlock in the match was broken, and it was Walsall that scored through Charlie Lakin, sparking wild celebrations in the stands and on the field.
Chesterfield levelled the game in the fourth minute of stoppage-time to get back to within two goals on aggregate when Armando Dobra fired home from inside the box, but it was far too little and far too late for the visitors.
A minute later, Walsall bagged a second to rubber stamp victory, this time Levi Amantchi heading home unmarked at the far post, and as he wheeled away to celebreat, the home fans poured on to the pitch, sparking a long delay before the final seconds could be played out.
Walsall will play either AFC Wimbledon or Notts County in the final on 29 May (AEST), with promotion to EFL League One up for grabs.
Wimbledon and Notts County will complete their tie on Saturday, with Wimbledon 1-0 up on aggregate.
