Miami showed 'heart and soul to fight' after Philadelphia fightback, says Mascherano
Inter Miami were staring down the barrel of another defeat, but scored twice in the last three minutes to rescue a point on Saturday.
Javier Mascherano hailed Inter Miami's "heart and soul to fight" following their dramatic fightback against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.
The Herons recovered from 2-0 and 3-1 down to rescue a 3-3 draw at Subaru Park, thanks to Telasco Segovia's last-gasp equaliser.
Miami, who have won just one of their last eight matches, appeared on course for a fourth defeat in six after first-half goals from Quinn Sullivan and Tai Baribo put Philadelphia in control.
Although Tadeo Allende reduced the deficit after the break, Baribo netted again and the hosts were two goals to the good heading into the 87th minute.
However, Lionel Messi's superb free-kick gave Mascherano's side hope, before Segovia's long-range strike deep into stoppage time ensured a share of the spoils.
Mascherano was pleased by the way his players dug deep to snatch a point, but acknowledged there is work to be done if his side are to improve their fortunes.
"I told them at half-time that we were in a situation that was s**t. We are in the s**t," he told reporters during his post-match press conference.
"We showed character, personality. They showed that they wanted to fight, to take [control] of this situation. We are in a situation, in a bad dynamic, but with a lot of spirit to come back to be the team that we were at the beginning of this season.
"Today, I think we showed that we have soul and heart to fight. This is the way. Obviously, we have to improve a lot of things.
"We cannot concede every single corner, every single throw-in, give the opponent chances to score. We have to start more focused in this kind of situation. But at the end, I think we did everything to win."
