San Jose Earthquakes 3-3 Inter Miami: Allende rescues point in comeback
Inter Miami came out of the blocks quickly, but then had to come from behind to earn a point at San Jose Earthquakes in MLS.
Tadeo Allende scored twice to help Inter Miami come from behind to earn a 3-3 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes in MLS on Wednesday.
Miami had led after a very early goal, but were then forced to overcome two deficits, though neither team could find a late winner.
Maximiliano Falcon scored after just 34 seconds to get the ball rolling for Miami; from a short corner routine, Jordi Alba dinked a lovely first-time cross into the box, and Falcon nodded home.
However, just 91 seconds later, San Jose found a leveller. Cristian Arango, who was forced off injured later in the first half, put Oscar Ustari under pressure after Miami played a free-kick backwards, and Cristian Espinoza latched onto a loose clearance to tee up the striker, who slotted home from close range.
Lionel Messi then fired wide, but the Earthquakes got the next goal in the 37th minute, with Beau Leroux latching onto Sergio Busquets' short clearance to send a half-volley past Ustari.
Messi and Alba linked up well to set up Miami's equaliser, with the latter fizzing a low cross into the six-yard box for Allende to rifle home from close range 44 minutes in.
The Herons were behind at the break, though, with Ian Harkes' precise low finish into the bottom-left corner in the fourth minute of stoppage time giving San Jose a 3-2 lead.
Allende restored parity again seven minutes into the second half, meeting substitute Baltasar Rodriguez's low cross to turn a first-time shot past Daniel.
Espinoza then saw a goal disallowed just past the hour as Ousseni Bouda set him up from an offside position. Messi also saw a late chance blocked before Hernan Lopez fired a last-gasp effort just wide of the post for San Jose as the spoils were shared.
There was late drama after the whistle as Messi aired his frustrations with the referee over the decision not to award him a free-kick, with members of San Jose's coaching staff pulling him away from the official to stop him from being shown a red card for dissent, moments after he was booked.
Data Debrief: Miami come up short
Having suffered their biggest-ever defeat with Messi in the side against Minnesota United at the weekend, it was not quite the bounceback Javier Mascherano would have hoped.
They made a lightning-quick start though, netting the fastest goal in MLS this season, and have avoided defeat in their last seven league matches when taking the lead.
However, Arango sparked San Jose, netting his ninth goal in MLS this term and scoring for the third game in a row. He could be a big miss if the injury is serious.
Miami certainly had their chances, creating 2,35 expected goals (xG) from 10 shots. San Jose had 13 attempts, though only created 1.28 xG as they showed off their finishing.
