Penalties reign in dramatic draw at the Cottage
Three penalties were scored as Fulham and Ipswich Town played out a dramatic 2-2 Premier League draw, with Raul Jimenez netting twice from the spot to earn the hosts a point at Craven Cottage.
Ipswich initially went ahead when Sammie Szmodics pounced on a poor Calvin Bassey clearance late in the first half, but the rest of the game was decided from the spot.
Jimenez slotted home the first spot-kick in the 69th minute after Sam Morsy trod on Harry Wilson's foot, but Ipswich was back in front just two minutes later.
Liam Delap was fouled by Timothy Castagne on the left side of the Fulham area, and Ipswich's leading scorer picked himself up to blast home his eighth league goal of the season.
That put Ipswich on course for its first set of back-to-back Premier League wins this term, but Leif Davis's tired challenge on Jimenez allowed him to net his second penalty in the 91st minute.
The result denied Ipswich the opportunity to escape the relegation zone, and the Tractor Boys remain behind 17th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers on goal difference.
Fulham, meanwhile, stays ninth on the table, two points adrift of Aston Villa in eighth.
A furious Marco Silva said he would be "in trouble" if he discussed the officials' performance after the match.
The officials decided Fulham had not been denied a clear goalscoring opportunity in a decision that incensed Silva, who was also frustrated by the time it took to award the hosts' first spot-kick – given after a VAR review.
"It should be one man more. It's difficult to understand why it was not a red card," Silva fumed.
On Darren Bond's failure to award Fulham's first penalty in real time, he added: "It was a clear penalty – one of the biggest this season. I am going to be in trouble [if I talk about it] and I don't want to be."
This was the first match in the Premier League to feature three penalties, including at least one for each team, since Fulham beat Wolves 3-2 in November 2023.
Jimenez is now up to 10 successful penalties from as many attempts in his Premier League career.
Silva was delighted with Jimenez's performance but acknowledged his team must show more if it is to seriously challenge for Europe, having drawn five of its past seven games.
"It was a great performance by Raul Jimenez. He showed the character and the calmness," Silva said.
"There are many positives I take from the game. In some moments we cannot concede like we did and we have been punished by some mistakes.
"Everybody can talk about European hopes. I prefer our team to speak on the pitch. If you want to be fighting you have to be much more ruthless and aggressive."
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna's team has now dropped 17 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season – only Fulham (19) and Brighton (18) have dropped more.
"There were lots of good things about the performance, a really good game and one we could have won," McKenna said.
"I'm disappointed we have given away two penalties. We put ourselves in a really good position in the second half.
"The two penalties that we conceded were frustrating because they were both breakaways from our attacks."
Ipswich has conceded five goals via penalties this season, with only Wolverhampton Wanderers able to match that figure in the Premier League.
However, McKenna believes his side has made an important breakthrough lately, having also been competitive in a 1-0 defeat at Arsenal before registering an upset win over Chelsea.
"We had the better chances in the second half from open play. I think we have learned how to manage games," he said.
"We've had a good last three performances; Arsenal, Chelsea and Fulham. We have been competitive most of the season. Today, maybe we have left a couple of points out there."
Ipswich also completed its first signing of the January transfer window, bringing in Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey on loan for the remainder of the season.
Godfrey, who has been capped by England twice but had fallen out of favour with the Serie A contender, said: "It's been an exciting couple of days and I'm just delighted to have signed and can't wait to meet the lads and get started.
"I have really enjoyed speaking to the manager and to have the opportunity to work under him now is something I'm very excited about.
"I've watched a lot of the games from the first half of the season and you can tell from those that the group is a tight one, full of players giving everything to achieve their goals."
